9 Foolproof Ways To Get Repeat Visitors To Your Website

I am guilty of this… seriously!

Prior to this day, whenever someone visited my site chances are very likely that most of them left within the first ten seconds, never to return again.

The worst part about this is they leave without buying anything. They don’t even take the time to leave me a name, number or email address, so I have no idea how to reach them again. I’ve been missing a LOT of subscribers & potential customers just by ignoring completely this important aspects of getting repeat visitors to my website.

So in today’s lesson I’m going to go over some simple BUT highly effective & proven tips from top marketers that you can use to get people to come back to your website repeatedly.

Let’s get started:

#1 – Update the pages or posts on your website frequently.

Basically, stagnant sites are dropped by some search engines. This works for MOST cases, however, I know of a marketer who has a HUGE responsive list of more than 100,000 subscribers (all obtained from organic traffic, not from any co-registration companies), and he does NOT update his pages or blog posts frequently.

Any exceptions from the mass?

Yes! Definitely!

His site is still able to retain top rankings in the major search engines. So you might be asking what different approach does he adopt then?

Here is the answer: He only writes HIGH QUALITY articles.. and it doesn’t matter how many words are in it. The important aspect here is to write as much as needed in order to make his readers understand the real message of what he is trying to convey.. and that’s it..

Simple?

Well, it definitely looks like a simple thing to do but writing quality posts isn’t what most people (including me) can do often.

So let’s keep trying shall we? Practice makes perfect, no doubt about that! 🙂

#2 – Allow visitors to ‘opt in’ to get special offers.

Place a link on your site to invite visitors to ‘opt in’ to get a monthly newsletter, or valuable coupons, or special discounts, etc. There is nothing more important that building that list. The money is in the quality list. If you provide quality information, your subscriber will love you and stay loyal to your list.

They will listen to your recommendation and the last thing they’ll ever do is to unsubscribe from your list.

A good place to start collecting opt-in subscribers is to get yourself an autoresponder service. Here’s one of the best out there: Aweber

#3 – Book Mark this site script.

Add a link to your primary page with a script ‘Book Mark or Add this site to your Favorites’. Some of your visitors are just planning to browse through websites to kill their time. Whatever the reasons may be, they might be seriously interested later on during the day in knowing what you have to offer. By giving them the option of just a few clicks (just one click most of the time!) to bookmark your site, you will have another good chance of having your visitors to come back to your site again! 🙂

You can use a free javascript code to have this installed on your site. Here is one good place: JavaScript bookmark script

#4 – Show this to a friend script.

Sometimes, your visitor may not be interested in your offer BUT they know if someone else who are interested in it. Therefore, by placing a ‘Recommend this site to a friend’ script or also widely known as “Tell-A-Friend”, your visitor can email your website link to their friend(s), with a pre written title, “Thought you might be interested in this”, just by clicking on it. This ensures that even though you will lose a visitor, you will still get more visitors based on the referral of the former. Here are a few scripts that you can use: Smart Addon, Javascript Kit – Tell-A-Friend Script, etc. You can also easily do a search on Google with the keywords “Tell a friend script”.

#5 – Promote yourself.

Brand your website so that visitors always know they are on your site. Use consistent colors, logos and slogans and always provide a ‘Contact Us’ link on each page. This is very important as you want your visitors to get a good browsing experience on your site. You also want them to know who they are dealing with. This will make them feel at ease and are more likely to come back for more positive end-user experience.

You can accomplish this task easily by using a platform like WordPress to run your sites. With WordPress, you will use a theme (so called a ‘template’) that can consistently display the same site’s header, footer, widgets, background, etc throughout all pages. It is so easy to manage a WordPress site from the admin area. There are a lot more advantages to using WordPress over HTML static sites however we are not here to go deep into this issue right now.

#6 – Create a ‘Our Policies’ page that clearly defines your philosophy and principles in dealing with your customers.

A few visitors are extremely particular on who and what they are dealing with. By clearly defining a ‘Our Policies’ page, along with a privacy policy as well, clients know they are secure when they visit your site.

#7 – Add an FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) page.

Create a FAQ page which addresses most of the doubts and clarifications about your product or your company that are likely to be asked. This helps to resolve most of the customers doubts in their first visit to your site.

#8 – Titles and keywords.

Ensure that each page on your website has appropriate titles and keywords so that your customer can find their way back to your site if they lose the book mark.

#9 – Make your website more interactive.

I bet this is one of the most common factors visitors will ALWAYS come back to your site – Make your website more interactive. Make it interesting and fun for them to stick around.

Let’s take a look at most social networking sites as an example.

Go to the main page and snoop around. Not only do they provide a place for people to meet and get to know each other, they have polls, classifieds, forums, videos and more. All designed to get you to stick around and come back again.

Now I’m not saying that you should try to compete with them, but what you can do is take the time to design your web pages so that your visitors will want to click around for a while and get to know you.

The key is to give them something to do and a very good reason to come back. The longer you can keep their attention the more times you can get them to come back… and the better this is for you and your business!

  1. My website pretty much fails in all of the categories listed here for the exception of updating frequently. I really need to implement an opt in and at the very least I need an ‘Our Policies’ page. I looked at developing my website as just writing new articles and letting google do the work for me, but it doesn’t matter how many visitors I get from google if the visitors don’t come back to my website. Oh man I’ve got so much to learn..

  2. Hi Tyson,

Yes I suggest you quickly implement an opt-in on your sites. Developing the list should be your top priority.

Looking at the bright side, at least you update your site frequently… 🙂

  3. I get a lot of visitors to my site but not many opt ins, What could I be doing wrong? Maybe I need to position the opt in box better? Is there a wordpress plugin for popups that are free?

    1. Hi Lynn,

there are many factors for the low opt-in rates. You will have to test different methods. The best is to follow the proven methods laid down by the experts in this industry (I ain’t one of them)

There are a few FREE wordpress plugins for popups. One of them is this: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-popup/. However, most free popups have limitations in their features. I’m using a good one here: http://www.maxblogpress.com/668/maxblogpress-subscriber-magnet

      Hope this helps..
